1、對申請學校認知不多
有的學生在選擇學校和專業(yè)的時候沒有仔細考慮自身的情況，甚至有的抱著非不讀的想法，但是也沒有仔細去咨詢了解對方學校的情況。因此對于大多學校都會提出的問題——why choose this school，學生不能說出學校的大致情況、特點和優(yōu)勢，回答時敷衍了事，只說出最表層的一些東西?；卮鸩坏轿痪捅┞冻鲎约旱膽B(tài)度，很難看出申請人對學校的興趣和向往程度。
2、回答問題時沒有正確審題
一些在思想上很懶惰的學生總以為各個學校問的題目差不多就可以互相借用，沒有認真審題就把申請學校A的套用在學校B上；還有的學生審題不到位，在內容上出現(xiàn)了很多與主題或者申請不相干的部分。
3、找不到思路，不會轉換
有的學生想考察學生的思維靈活度，想知道學生的專業(yè)水平或是人際交往的態(tài)度等，提出的問題都是很簡單的。例如芝加哥大學：請比較蘋果和橘子，這個題目就不應該只寫兩種水果的區(qū)別什么的，可以將兩種水果擬人化，各種水果代表哪兩種人等等。總之，思維不要太死板，學會轉換。
4、詞句使用不恰當
大多英語水平有待提高的學生要么用詞太過簡單，要么總是喜歡用晦澀、深奧的來讓錄取官認為自己的具有多大的詞匯量。前者會使文章顯得沒有一點深度，后者容易使文章看著不順暢，讀著拗口。所以，在寫作時首先要有條理表明自己的看法，其次使文章讀起來語句通順，再使用一些有真正意義和內涵的語句。
5、文章呈現(xiàn)的語氣讓人難以接受
有的文章語氣平平毫無生氣；有的過于激烈，為了顯示自己是對的，極力鼓吹自己的看法或價值觀；有的一味夸對方學校是多么地有名氣，甚至用哀憐的語氣博得錄取官的同情。這都是不可取的，適當?shù)刭潛P即可，盡量使文章讀起來有生機活力，做到態(tài)度理性冷靜客觀。
6、語法拼寫等小錯誤
